David Mason is 20, has learning disabilities and life-long interest in trains. Five years ago he started the first of a series of short work experience placements at Network Rail. Each summer he returned for a couple of weeks to learn new skills.

Having got to know David well, and benefitted from his reliability, accuracy and methodical work approach, Network Rail realised they had a potential gem of an employee. Once David had left college they supported him through a small number of capability assessments before offerering him a position in the Schedual Quality Support team.

David now has responsiblilty for a number of quality assurance matters including entering logistical information into the mainframe train service database. A key member of the team, he has a 100% attendance record since he started his job in January 2009.

“I just love getting up every day and going to work,” says David.
